Can CBD help perimenopause?

Most women will have heard about menopause, thanks to hundreds of brave women speaking out more about what was once a taboo subject. But often, when people refer to menopause, they are really talking about perimenopause, which is spoken of much less.

Well, it's time perimenopause had a spotlight. So we're going to discuss what it is, how long women will go through it and how CBD oil can lessen the impact of symptoms.

What is perimenopause?

Perimenopause comes before menopause and is often confused with menopause because the symptoms are similar. Its name actually means 'around menopause.'

During perimenopause, people who have periods start to produce less progesterone and oestrogen, which brings on symptoms. Although there's no exact age where perimenopause kicks in, on average, women begin to notice signs and symptoms in their mid-forties.

How many years does perimenopause last?

To make things even more annoying and complicated, there’s also no ‘set time’ that perimenopause will run its course. For some people, it lasts several months. For others, up to a decade.

Perimenopause medically ends when you have missed twelve periods in a row. It’s at this point that menopause will have kicked in.

Perimenopause symptoms

There is a range of symptoms you may experience when journeying through perimenopause. Please remember that you may notice some of these or none at all. Or you may have mild symptoms while someone else really struggles. Unfortunately, you just won't know until it begins. Here's a non-exhaustive list of potential perimenopause symptoms:

  • Aching muscles.
  • Anxiety.
  • Difficulties concentrating or becoming forgetful.
  • Dry skin.
  • Hair growth on the face, neck and body.
  • Headaches.
  • Insomnia.
  • Irregular periods.
  • Painful joints.
  • Reduced bone and muscle mass.
  • Tender breasts.
  • Worsened PMS symptoms.

Do periods come more often during perimenopause?

Because of the progesterone and oestrogen levels changes, you may notice your monthly cycle going out of whack during perimenopause. You may experience:

    • Irregular periods - you may get them more or less often than is normal for you. You may also notice that you're getting your monthly bleed closer or further apart or that it lasts a lot longer or shorter than you expect.
    • Skipped periods - it's also normal for you to go some months without a period at all during perimenopause. Remember that it isn't until you've had twelve consecutive months period-free before menopause officially kicks in.
    • Lighter periods - So light, you may only see spotting rather than what a full period looks like for you.
    • Heavier periods - Or the opposite may happen, where you bleed a lot more than is usual for you. Don’t worry if this happens, but it's best to be prepared.

Can CBD help perimenopause?

Just like menopause, the idea of entering perimenopause can feel worrisome, especially when you clock all of the symptoms you may experience. The good news is that there are natural things you can do to lessen some of the impacts. And CBD oil is one of them. Here are a few ways CBD oil can make perimenopause more manageable:

Combating insomnia

Whether it's full-blown insomnia, disrupted sleep or a challenge to drift off, numerous consecutive nights of poor sleep can go on to impact other aspects of our lives.

By taking a few drops of CBD oil, you may find that your body relaxes enough to drift off to slumberland, that you experience fewer sleep disturbances and that you wake up refreshed.

Battling anxiety

CBD oil may help lessen feelings of anxiety, mood swings and even depression. When our hormones are all over the place, our mood tends to take a hit, too.

Reducing period pain

We’ve talked about the impact perimenopause can have on your monthly cycle, and unfortunately, if your periods become more frequent, so too might those stabby, excruciating cramps. CBD oil can reduce pain and inflammation, helping to relieve those cramps.

Lessening joint pain

We've just mentioned that CBD oil can reduce inflammation and pain, helping combat period cramps. But the same may be true for lessening joint pain.

During perimenopause, you may notice that old injuries start to give you gyp again; well, rather than suffer through it, reach for your CBD oil, which may relieve some of the pain you're feeling.
